How effective is your team’s decision making?

Decision making is a hot topic for many of our clients. We see and hear of decisions not being made, decisions not being supported, and decisions being revisited time and time again.

The ability to make decisions seems to be stifled by the dynamic and rapidly changing landscape we live in. We’ve observed factors such as lack of information, uncertainty, information overload, time pressure, fear of failure, reputational risk, overwhelm, change fatigue or lack of trust, all contributing to this inertia.

So, how can we develop our decision-making process to increase trust and build confidence in the chosen path forward, and therefore deliver the results we are striving for?

Our thoughts

While we acknowledge that different types of decisions require different types of deliberation, we believe a unified decision making process, adopted by individuals and teams alike, is highly beneficial.

A simple decision-making tool, or thinking structure, creates a common language to increase productivity, prevent conflict, achieve objectives and strengthen the organisation.

Rather than introduce a new tool, we use IGROW (the universal coaching tool) as a decision-making process. Using IGROW will help individuals and teams to:

  • Understand the issue and identify decisions to be made
  • Spot gaps between goals and the present situation
  • Get clear on the facts
  • Suspend assumptions
  • Evaluate options
  • Assess potential outcomes
  • Choose the most appropriate course of action, at that point in time

Ultimately, having a structure allows decisions to be made in a more timely manner, whilst boosting self-confidence and aiding the decision maker in taking ownership and responsibility for the decision. It gives the confidence to move forward.

So if you have a team who is struggling to make decisions at the moment, please give me a call for more information on using IGROW as a decision-making tool.
