Leadership or Culture? Which comes first?

Which of these statements are true?

  • Culture is both the cause of leaderships styles and the outcome of leadership styles
  • Leadership is both the contributor and outcome of culture
  • Culture impacts performance
  • Leadership is a critical lever to change culture

Okay it was a trick question… ALL four statements are true!

Leadership, culture, performance and change – all impact on each other – not one of them exists in isolation – yet they are often addressed in isolation or focused on individually.

So how do you create simple, pragmatic practices that addresses the symbiosis of these performance levers?

For us, it’s all about the organisational strategy. Heed the wise words of the Cheshire Cat…

“If you don’t know where you are going,
any road (culture or leadership style) will do.”

Clarifying and aligning leadership and cultural initiatives, to the organisational strategy, will deliver sustainable and meaningful performance, engagement and outcomes.

Until next week…
