Team Coaching vs Individual Coaching: Why the Best Leadership Teams Invest in Both

Developing individual leaders makes each person more effective. Team coaching makes a leadership team more than the sum of its parts. That's why the strongest leadership teams don't choose between the two — they invest in both.
Why great teams need more than great individuals
Every elite sporting team has a coach. Not because they're failing, and not because they're inexperienced — because talent alone doesn't create a great team. Yet in organisations we invest heavily in developing individual leaders, while giving far less attention to how leadership teams develop together. That's an interesting assumption worth questioning.
Individual coaching, offsites and team coaching are not the same thing
Individual coaching helps a leader become more effective. An offsite can help a team reset, reconnect and refocus. Team coaching is different again: it helps a leadership team become more than the sum of its parts. It's less about developing brilliant individuals and more about improving what happens between them.
What team coaching actually develops
Team coaching focuses on the space between people — the shared behaviours that decide whether a group of capable leaders performs as a team:
How decisions get made.
How conflict gets handled.
How accountability is shared.
How priorities stay aligned when the pressure is on.
Team coaching isn't a one-off event. It's an ongoing process that helps teams build the habits, rhythms and ways of working that keep making a difference long after everyone has gone back to the office.
It's not an either/or decision
We rarely ask whether a sporting team should have individual coaching or a team coach, the best teams have both. So it's worth asking why we so often treat individual coaching and team coaching as competing investments in organisations. Perhaps they were never meant to compete. The strongest leadership teams invest in developing their people and in how those people work together.
Worth noticing this week
So here's this week's thought starter.
If every member of your leadership team became a better leader tomorrow, would your team automatically become a better team?
Where does your team's real performance live — in individual talent, or in what happens between people?
Are you investing in both individual and team development, or defaulting to one?
Frequently asked questions
What is team coaching?
Team coaching is an ongoing process that helps a leadership team work better together — improving how they make decisions, handle conflict, share accountability and stay aligned under pressure. Rather than developing individuals in isolation, it focuses on what happens between people.
What's the difference between team coaching and an offsite?
An offsite is usually a one-off event that helps a team reset, reconnect and refocus. Team coaching is ongoing — it builds the habits, rhythms and ways of working that last long after everyone is back in the office.
Do we need team coaching if our leaders already have individual coaching?
Often, yes. Individual coaching makes each leader more effective, but a team of strong individuals doesn't automatically become a strong team. The best teams invest in both — developing their people and developing how those people work together.
If this has sparked your thinking, get in touch. We'd be happy to explore whether team coaching could help your leadership team move from working alongside each other to working brilliantly together.
Leadership is a practice, not a position — and so is teamwork. The strongest leadership teams grow gram by gram, in the space between people.
